…Promoting literacy through visual arts

BACKGROUND

Illmi Children’s Fund, an NGO whose mandate is to bridge the gap between funding and access to basic education and literacy will partner with Art for Literacy, a group of visual artists in Nigeria for an art exhibition that will help drive home the message of quality and inclusive education through the art medium, as well as raise funds for Nigeria’s over 10 million out-of-school children and ICF’s literacy initiatives in marginalised and hard-to-reach communities across Nigeria. 

 

The exhibition will bring together seasoned and upcoming artists who believe in the power of art to influence positive change and bring about social justice. Audience at the Art exhibition are expected to be drawn from all walks of life including Philanthropy, Technology, Policy Makers and the expatriate community.

THE GOAL

The overarching goal of the exhibition is to raise awareness on the poor state of basic education in the country, identify artistic talents and to raise funds that will enable access to basic education for children from underserved communities.

OBJECTIVES

  • To raise funds for out-of-school children.
  • To help fund and scale ICF’s initiatives to provide literacy and numeracy skills for hard-to-reach and marginalized societies.
  • To create a platform for identifying artistic talents in hard-to-reach and marginalized societies.

METHODOLOGY

  • Collection of all artworks in one place by July 31.
  • Artists will collect 50 % of the proceeds for each piece of art sold and the remaining 50% will be donated to ICF.
  • Every artist can exhibit a MAXIMUM of three works. Founders of Art for Literacy can exhibit up to five works.
  • Every artist will have a minute to talk about one of his/her work from the collection .
  • There will be a 15 minute fireside chat where one of the founders will talk about the relationship between Art and Philanthropy. And why it is imperative for an artist to be an integral part of tackling national challenges.
  • Every Artist is required to send a short bio, a portrait photo, and short 30- second videos of some of their works.
  • Every art work to be exhibited must have a title or the artist must boldly indicate that it’s deliberate left untitled. The artist must also describe the art in words like “oil on canvas” “mixed media” “acrylic on canvas” etc.
